A: Foreign financial institutions typically have relationships with U.S. correspondent’s banks. U.S. correspondent banks will convert foreign currency wires to U.S. dollars if necessary and route wires to domestic financial institutions based on ABA routing numbers. Let your remitter know that a SWIFT code is not required for you to receive international funds. Low Cost International Wires: To meet the needs of our members who send money to family and friends in other countries, AEA Federal Credit Union introduces the International Remittance Network (IRnet), a money transfer service backed by World Council of Credit Unions, Inc. and Vigo Remittance Corporation. Here's an example of how this program works: Individuals can send up to $1,000 to Mexico for as little as $10 per transmission, much less than other wire transfer services providers. IRnet does not charge foreign recipients any fee for accepting transfers and exchange rates are guaranteed at the time of the transaction and consistently better than the competition. As not-for-profit financial cooperatives, credit unions are able to offer rates lower than the competition and deliver more money safely to the recipient. Membes are welcome to transfer funds to 41 different countries. For more information about the IRnet Money Transfer Program, please contact us or visit any AEA FCU office for assistance. |
